Due to a federal funding shortage, Portland Public School elementary schools will not be receiving snacks until October 1st. At Woodmere Elementary School, some students will go four hours between meals. Woodmere is a Title 1 school, receiving free breakfast and lunch for all students. The food pantry at Woodmere is already straining to provide enough food assistance for families and the school year has only begun. The lack of snacks is detrimental to the education of these 300 students. If a child is hungry, they can’t focus on learning.
You can help with snack donations! See the list below for snacks that are easy for teachers and staff to offer without preparation.
Individually boxed raisins/craisins
Cereal and/or oatmeal bars (avoid nuts when possible)
String or stick cheese
Donations are being coordinated by BDNA volunteers. To arrange drop-off or pick-up, please send us an email with “Snack Donation” in the subject line. Any extra donations will be sent to Whitman Elementary School or used in local food pantries.
Brentwood-Darlington is home to five schools, including Woodmere Elementary School. Woodmere is a diverse Title I school located in the northeast corner of the neighborhood and serves families from Brentwood-Darlington, Lents, and Mt Scott-Arleta. In past years, Woodmere has worked with Schoolhouse Supplies and a corporate sponsor to provide a backpack full of supplies to every child attending. This program relieves a significant burden on families and helps every student start the year on the right foot. Unfortunately, Woodmere’s longterm sponsor is no longer participating for the 2019-20 school year. This leaves over 300 students without the supplies they need to be successful. But you can help!
Woodmere Elementary Food Pantry has empty shelves and needs donations! This pantry sends home over 30 backpacks of food weekly, as well as being open for families in need. To donate contact the SUN office at 503-734-5423.
Now through Sunday, December 23rd, Mehri’s Cafe and Bakery (6923 SE 52nd Ave) is doing a Giving Tree to raise money and supplies for Oregon Humane Society. Neighbors are encouraged to donate new or gently used blankets, dog/cat food, treats, supplies, etc. All cash donations will be matched by Mehri’s! 100% of donations will be delivered directly to Oregon Humane Society on December 24th.
Questions? Stop by Mehri’s or give them a call during regular business hours, 7:00AM-3:00PM.
Help Mr. Stultz at Woodmere Elementary give his Unicycle Club students helmets!
Woodmere Elementary School offers unicycling to boys and girls in grades 2-5. These kids are awesome! They are hard working, committed and focused, often performing at school and neighborhood events. This great sport was introduced to them in a physical education class. Students gain confidence in their abilities and improve their skills. Unicycling is hard, helping students develop their perseverance, patience, and focus.
Many of the students wishing to participate in Unicycle Club do not have helmets at home and are unable to afford one. Students will earn the responsibility of borrowing a unicycle for the entire school year. Those who forget their helmet at home will be able to borrow one from school, ensuring that safety remains the top priority.
Students attend weekly practice and those that learn to ride earn a t-shirt and have the opportunity to ride in the Junior Rose Parade in June. They also are part of the school-wide performance in June.
