Lower SE Rising Area Plan

BPS and PBOT launch latest planning effort: Lower Southeast Rising Area Plan

City bureaus to address the historic lack of infrastructure investment in this area of Southeast and East Portland; seek community input to guide healthy community development.

The Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) and Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) are collaborating with community members to assess land use and transportation issues for Brentwood-Darlington and portions of the Lents, Ardenwald-Johnson Creek, Mt Scott-Arleta, and Woodstock neighborhoods. This new planning effort is called the Lower Southeast Rising Area Plan.

The bureaus recognize the historic lack of infrastructure investment in this area of East Portland. So they are seeking community input to guide healthy community development for the area, which has many unimproved roads, sidewalk gaps, limited street networks, poor transit service, and few neighborhood commercial amenities.

Master Gardeners Demo Garden Reopens to the Public!

Come visit us! The Multnomah County Master Gardener Demonstration Garden in SE Portland is now open to the public!  After a very long and bumpy road since March of 2020, we can now invite anyone who wants to visit to stop by and check out our garden.

The garden occupies around an acre of land. It includes raised garden beds where you can see different gardening techniques for growing a variety of vegetables, small fruits, and herbs. Visitors to the garden can observe a variety of growing methods, from trellising plants to pruning methods. You can ask questions of the knowledgeable gardener volunteers. Produce harvested at the garden is donated to local food banks. 

The garden also boasts several perennial beds with informational signage to educate visitors. We follow organic gardening practices; our garden is a Certified Backyard Habitat space and is striving to become a pollinator parkway in SE Portland.

Visit the garden throughout the spring, summer and early fall on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9am to 12noon. Other days are sometimes available.  

The garden is located in SE Portland. Our pedestrian gate is on SE 57th Ave just south of Duke. Parking is on the street on the east side of 57th at that gate. Simply follow the short gravel path to the garden. We hope to see you there soon!

Final Public Health Assessment Report for Precision Castparts

The final Public Health Assessment Report for Precision Castparts (PCC) has been uploaded to the Oregon Health Authority (OHA)’s website. A copy of the final report was shared with attendees at the March 18, 2020 virtual meeting hosted by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). (The public release was delayed due to OHA prioritizing the COVID-19 pandemic response.)

Although their public health assessment work is now complete, there are ongoing soil and water cleanup activities occurring at the PCC facility. PCC was also recently called into the Cleaner Air Oregon program, where it will be required to conduct a health-based risk assessment of its emissions. These activities are led by DEQ with support and consultation from the OHA Environmental Public Health team.

Dear PPS Families,

As we shared Thursday night, Portland Public Schools will extend spring break, beginning Monday, March 16 with a plan for students to return to schools on Wednesday, April 1 (staff will be expected to return on Monday, March 30, two days earlier). During this time, all school activities, including athletic events and practices, are canceled. We know that many families depend on schools not only for their students’ education, but also for meals, child care, access to health services and other supports. We are working quickly to identify ways to provide services to students and families during the extended break:

Master Gardeners Native Plant Sale

Multnomah County Master Gardeners are partnering with Sparrowhawk Native Plants for a pop-up plant sale!
