Takeaway #2 – BDNA General Meeting – March 2024

Lane Middle School – Annual 8th Graders’ Trip Creates Lifelong Affirmations

Many schools send their students to visit Washington DC and New York City.  In 2023, Lane Middle School launched this annual rite of passage as well – for 21 8th graders.

The project is expensive.  Without help, many Lane students can’t participate in a ritual that yields lifelong memories, growth, and the critical sense that much is possible.

Many 2023 students were able to raise funds on their own.  Some even took on part-time jobs. Family members contributed, too.

But $2,600 is a tough goal.  Of 21 students in 2023, 13 were able to meet the goal.  Eight students relied on scholarships or donations from teachers (who do not have the income of an Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos).

For 2024’s trip, 18 students have enrolled.  Four need financial support.  More would have enrolled if the barrier were not so high.

PLEASE DONATE TO OUR LANE STUDENTS!!!  This is how residents can help.

There are three paths:

(1) Lane teachers have created a GoFundMe called “Equity Scholarship Funding” to help the students with the greatest need.  Access the fund at https://gofund.me/789b3356  [No tax receipt for donation]

(2) Or we can donate directly to students who have “Student Gift of Travel Pages” accounts. One enterprising Lane student has created an account; we may donate to Jaylen at account.efexploreamerica.com/donations/QevJzj   [No tax receipt for donation]

Another great student, Dondre, also has a special account.  Lane has celebrated Dondre for Black excellence because of his high GPA and because he has overcome so many obstacles to become a local leader. He will gain a semester of high-school credit while traveling with his teammates and peers.  We may donate to Dondre at account.efexploreamerica.com/donations/pyEaEJ  [No tax receipt for donation]

(3) Or we can drop off or send checks to the Lane Middle School PTA.  Such funding will be distributed to all of the traveling students.  Addess is LMS PTA, c/o Lane Middle School, 7200 SE 60th Avenue, Portland, OR 97206.  [Yes, tax receipts for these donations]

PLEASE DONATE.  Remember, not all students have the life experiences they need to thrive.  We can do our part to change that, donation by donation.

Lane teachers also seek volunteers to help fundraise or connect with local businesses that could sponsor students.  Communicate with teachers via the Lane PTA.
